PHCC Creates an Emergency Fund for Students Impacted by COVID-19

MARTINSVILLE, VA –  The Patrick Henry Community College Foundation has established an emergency student aid fund to help students facing economic challenges due to changes that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought.

The PHCC COVID-19 Student Emergency Response Fund aims to raise funds to cover emergency needs related to food and materials for successful course completion as well as transportation and childcare.

“Around the nation, many are losing jobs or not able to work right now because of the pandemic,” says Tiffani Underwood, the Director of PHCC’s Foundation. “A number of our Patriots may be facing these hardships while trying to keep up with classwork. We want to do everything we can to ease their burdens so they can continue to be successful.”

In the past year, the college’s on-campus food bank has provided food and household necessities for more than 150 students. Many students report housing insecurities, care for young children, and work multiple jobs. In a time of crisis, these students may have difficulties meeting basic necessities for themselves and their families.

“Ensuring that our students have every resource that we can provide is critical,” says PHCC President Dr. Angeline Godwin. “In a time like this, our community must rally together to protect each other and to look out for our most vulnerable. This emergency fund will provide a simple, easily accessible portal so those who are willing to give can reach those who need the help.“

The college foundation has stated that it welcomes gifts of all sizes.
