Patrick Henry Community College and the PHCC Foundation established a scholarship in memory of a long-serving staff member killed Friday, Aug. 15 in a car accident.

The Cristy Reynolds Memorial Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to a first-generation college student, as funds allow.

Reynolds served as the coordinator for the Integrated Advising, Testing and Career Center (IATCC), a position she held since 2007. She began her tenure at PHCC in 1999 as an office services assistance, then becoming a case manager for PHCC's Workforce Investment Act One-Stop Center.

After moving to Danville Community College in 2004, she returned to PHCC in 2005 as an outreach advising specialist until moving into her most recent role as IATCC coordinator.

Christopher Parker, vice president of institutional advancement and executive director of the PHCC Foundation, said establishing a scholarship in Reynolds' name is a fitting way to honor her work and commitment to the college.

"Cristy embodied what it meant to be a PHCC Patriot," Parker said. "She was first and foremost dedicated to her family, but right after that was her dedication to the PHCC family and the many students she helped throughout her career. She will certainly be missed."

To recognize her exemplary contributions to PHCC and the community, Reynolds was honored this year as one of nine "Distinguished Alumni" of PHCC in May. She graduated from the college in 2000 and went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees from Old Dominion University.
